The island of Guernsey and the other Channel Islands represent the last remnants of the medieval Dukedom of Normandy, which held sway in both France and England. The islands were the only British soil occupied by German troops in World War II.

Guernsey, the second largest of the Channel Islands, lies in the English Channel, 50km to the west of France.  Though it is a British dependency, it is effectively self-governing, and administers all the other Channel Islands bar Jersey. Picturesque scenery, a gentle climate, and the relaxed lifestyle of its inhabitants make tourism an economic mainstay. Market gardening is also important and the island is famed for its distinctive cattle. Immigration is strictly controlled.
